IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT AREA CODE 809!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We actually received a call last week from the 809 Area code. The woman said "Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I missed you--get back to us quickly. I Have something important to tell you." Then she repeated a phone number beginning with 809 . "We didn't respond".
Then this week, we received the following e-mail:
Subject: DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809 , 284 AND 876
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION PROVIDED TO US BY AT&T. DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE ( 809 )!!!!!!
This one is being distributed all over the US . This is pretty scary, especially given the way they try to get you to call. Be sure you read this and pass it on. They get you to call by telling you that it is information about a family member who has been ill or to tell you someone has-been arrested, died, or to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, etc. In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls.
If you call from the US , you will apparently be charged $2425 per-minute.
Or, you'll get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges. Unfortunately, when you get your phone bill, you'll often be charged more than $24, 100.00.
WHY IT WORKS:
The 809 area code is located in the British Virgin Islands (The Bahamas). The charges afterwards can become a real nightmare. That's because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You'll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.
Please forward this entire message to your friends, family and colleagues to help them become aware of this scam

A family member of mine forwarded an e-mail warning me to never call the 809 area code. The e-mail stated that by calling a number with this area code, victims would be charged $2,400 per minute, resulting in a large, non-negotiable international bill that neither the local nor long-distance phone company would write- off. While the scam is real, the information was exaggerated. Read on to find out how this scam can affect you.
The 809 area code scam has been around for about five years; and while it snares its fare share of victims, the scam raises more eyebrows and prompts inquiries than anything else.
If you’ve ever dialed an international number, you know that “011” precedes the phone number. But did you know that there are locations outside the U.S. whose telephone numbers may look like domestic long- distance calls, but are actually international calls? The 809 area code falls into this category, along with the 284 and 876 area codes. What do they have in common? They are all located close to the United States in the Caribbean!
809: Dominican Republic 284: British Virgin Islands 876: Jamaica
P.S. Dialing from the US to Canada does not require “011” but does count as an international call.
How the Scam Works: The scam arrives in a variety of forms all of which stress a sense of urgency and require you to call and seek out more information. You may receive:
An advertisement for a service that directs you to call a specific number An “urgent” e-mail message An “urgent” message on your answering machine about a relative who has died, been arrested or injured.
When consumers fall prey and call the number, the scam artist attempts to keep the caller on the line for as long as possible to increase the caller's long distance calling charges.
The international rates to the Caribbean are around $4.00 per minute and can add up fast while you are on hold or navigating through a phone menu.

OK, I got the point, but if rates to Caribbean are around $4.00 per minute, how come they would bill $2,400.00 per minute?
