For example, a lot of idiots on TV taldychat about "record breaking profits of the oil companies," What they really mean are gross receipts!!! What does that have anything to do with profits??? Yet PROFIT MARGINS of the oil companies are not record breaking at all! They comparable to any other mainstream business.

Gross receipts? Gross receipts aren't what's reported....net profit is what's reported...let's not throw sand into people's eyes.

Ok, Reina, let's assume for the sake of the argument, we are talking net profits. How is it determined where the profit is record or not???
Just to cite so-many billions of net profit and declare is "record" is silly if you don't also mention what the profit MARGIN was. And profit margin of oil companies is not record ANYTHING. They get and deliver a lot of oil, but they also spend and invest a lot- and that's what is concealed by those who yell about those evil "record profits"

Sergo, are you lobbyist for oil company? If not what are you talking about: FY 2011 Q2 income after tax 10,898.0 FY 2011 Q1 income after tax 10,913.0 I guess you right last quarter was not record breaking. The record was set in 2008 for total net income of 45,220.0 Still HUGE profits

Iggy, I am libertarian- that means I am eternal lobbyist for freedom- economic and personal.

Secondly, this number $10 billion or whatever standing alone- means very little.
Let me give you an example. Let's say you have a business, where your gross receipts are $100,000 and cost of doing business is $50,000, That means your net income is $50,000 and your profit margin is whopping 100%- that's a truly super profit!!!

And, let's say, there is my business, where the gross receipts
are $1,000,050.00 and the cost of doing business is $1,000,000. Here, my net income is the same as your business, but look at the profit margin!!!! It' microscopic! I really have to move a lot of merchandise to get the same profit.

Same with the oil companies- they DO A LOT OF WORK TO GET THAT 10 BILLION DOLLARS, and their profit margin is very very modest.

Now, I am not against eliminating subsidies- but not just for oil companies. We have to COMPLETELY remove the federal government from the subsidy business! F..k the farmers!!!
F..k the oil companies! F...k alternative energey companies! F..k the rich! F...k the poor!
F...k anybody who extends his hand for a subsidy!!!

(You are getting my drift, I hope?)

Iggy- if they do something illegal, sure, throw the book at them. But I don't hate companies for getting profits. Profits are good!
