Russian scientist died in fall at Fermilab
By James Fuller and Susan Sarkauskas | Daily Herald

Police identified the woman found dead at Fermilab in Batavia Thursday as a 24-year-old visiting Russian scientist named Maria Beloyvan.

The preliminary cause of death indicates Beloyvan died from traumatic injuries to her chest, neck and back sustained in a fall. DuPage County Coroner staff could not yet say Friday afternoon what caused Beloyvan to fall or from what height she fell. DuPage County Sheriff's officers are investigating the case and have already said foul play is not suspected in Beloyvan's death.

Fermilab employees first discovered Beloyvan's body while investigating a noise in the lab's headquarters at Wilson Hall. Beloyvan was found lying on the floor of the atrium, according to a statement released by the lab. Batavia paramedics declared her dead shortly after 11 a.m.

Fermilab employees observed a moment of silence at 10:50 a.m. Friday in recognition of the woman's death.

The multistory atrium is in the center of the 16-story building. There are several bridges.
