Articles are a very difficult concept to grasp for non-english speakers, especially those whose native tongues don't have those. The rule of thumb is, you use "a" for a singular count noun which you bring up for the first time. Thereafter, you use "the" with it. "A" is not used for non-count nouns or geographic and personal names, but "the" is good with non-count nouns all the time, although it mostly doesn't go with geographic or personal names. However, there are exceptions to these rules too. For instance, all the water bodies save lakes and bays, need "the", and so do personal names, sometimes. For example, you can say, "This was not the Mary I knew 10 years ago" or " He is a Smith" (meaning part of the Smith family). So as I said, it's a hugely difficult thing to get down. Basically, you need to grow up here for that.

Из учебника английского для новых русских: Артикль "а" переводится как "типа", "the" как "конкретно". Примеры: "a car" - "типа машина"; "the boy" - " конкретно пацан".

И если счисляемые существительные во множественном числе - тоже не употребляется.

Определенный артикль употребляется:
1) Перед фамилиями в форме множественного числа: The Browns Брауны.
2)перед названиями болезней: the flu.
3)Перед существительными theatre, movies, Zoo в сочетании с to go.
4)Перед сущ-м time в вопросе о времени."do you have the time?"
5)перед названиями муз. инструментов в сочетании с to play.

Определенный артикль не употребляется:
1)перед вещественными существительными salad, steak,coffe и т.д.
2)перед сущ-ми breakfast,lunch, dinner, supper в сочетании с глаголом to have
When you usually have lunch?
3)перед названиями дней недели.
4)перед существительным class в значении "занятие" если перед ним нет определения.
I'm going to class now.
5)перед сущ-ми English,French и т.п. в значении английский, французский язык.
6)перед сущ-ми за которыми следует количественное числительное.
We are studying lesson7.
7)перед названиями городов и стран.
8)Перед собственными именами.

"the" is used with all of the above, honey. the salad we had for dinner was good. where did you learn the english you speak? countries: the united states, the united kingdom, the netherlands. holy crap, you people are something else. go study before teaching others.

there are NO instances where articles are not used at all, it just doesn't happen in english. they're used all the time. this is english for you, man, the language of articles and other weird things.

нет, нет, и еще раз нет!!! Есть много примеров, когда они не употребляются... то-то меня редактирует американец с PHD degree, он чтоли не знает?...

Но обьяснить не может, почему упорно в некоторых моих предложениях зачеркивает мои артикли.... Так правильнее, говорит, и все.... $Rolling\ Eyes$

i am american too and with a degree from northwestern. your friend is absolutely right, we don't study articles here and can't explain their use. you've got to go to school and have a linguist explain them but i am not sure they can because this is something you need to have a feel for.

Ok, ok, "I am an American" budet pravil'no, esli upotreblyaetsya vmeste s imenem sushestvitel'nym, naprimer: I am an American citizen.

"american" is both a noun and an adjective, so it's equally correct to say " i am american" and "i am an american". most people would probably say " i am american". and certainly " i am an american citizen" is correct because here "an" goes with "citizen". look, i'd love to give you some guidance but unfortunately, I can't. i can only explain specific examples, but not general rules, which, as i said before, probably don't even exist.
