Could you please advise me with my situation?

I am a Russian citizen staying in US. My visa is expired more than a year ago. I need to go to the Russian Embassy to work on some papers. And I am afraid to do that because they will find out that I have brocken the law. I don't want to be sent back to Russia.

Is there any reason why I should try to avoid walking in the Embassy?
Could they arrest me or take any other actions towards me making my situation worse?
