The Supreme Court of the United States ruled -- unanimously -- that an identity-theft law, a fan favorite among prosecutors, cannot be used against illegal immigrants who get caught using fake Social Security numbers. Instead, the Court held, illegal immigrants who use Social Security numbers to commit other crimes must know that the identification number belongs to a real person. The distinction is worth an extra two years of punishment.
