The shootings followed a confrontation in a strip mall parking lot in the 1700 block of West Hintz Road. The victims reportedly arrived at a mall restaurant to find it closed and returned to their car. However, they were met by a number of individuals, one of whom brandished a knife and another who allegedly pulled a gun.

A third man was also shot, but his condition was not immediately available.

Several residents of the nearby Mallard Lake Apartments heard the commotion and awoke to find police arriving at the scene.

"All I heard was, 'Stop here, stop here!' And I looked out my bedroom window, and I saw all these squad cars, fire trucks, ambulances and, 'Don't move!' said Marla Obispo, who lives in the apartment complex.

Two men were taken into police custody after the shooting, NBC5's Sharon Wright reported. No charges have been filed.

Late Monday morning, police were still scouring the scene for evidence. Investigators were visible on the roof of the strip mall, where they may have been looking for a tossed weapon, Wright reported.

The North Regional Major Crimes Task Force is assisting Wheeling police in the investigation.

The identities of the victims have not been released.

Wheeling police are investigating the slaying of two men found shot near a shopping center early Monday in a predominantly Russian neighborhood of the northwest suburb.

Police responding to a disturbance call about midnight found the bodies of Roman A. Drobetskiy, 34, and Arkadiy Stepankovskiy, 29, behind Garden Fresh Plaza in the 700 block of South Widgeon Drive, Deputy Chief John Stone said.

Stepankovskiy, who lived in Des Plaines with his wife and 5-year-old daughter, worked as a private security guard and ran two Russian martial arts schools. His wife, Ekaterina, said the couple had lived in the U.S. for 10 years.

Drobetskiy lived in Wheeling. His family declined to comment.

A third man, whom police did not identify, was wounded and taken to a hospital, Stone said.

Police were questioning two people late Monday but said they had no suspects and no charges had been filed.

Monday afternoon, authorities gathered in the parking lot of a strip mall that has stores, including the Russian Kitchen, also known as Lisa's Catering, 1780 W. Hintz Rd. They combed the area surrounding the mall, a gas station and nearby Mallard Lake Apartments for evidence.

A Mallard Lake resident who heard gunshots late Sunday called police to report a disturbance, said Pam Chapman, a manager of the complex in the 1700 block of West Hintz Road.

Another Mallard Lake resident, Marla Obispo, said she woke up about 12:30 a.m. to flashing lights and sirens.

She said she saw police walk an injured man from the middle of the parking lot and sit him down on the curb.

"All I heard was [a police officer saying], `He's got blood on his legs and his head,'" Obispo said.

Natasha Ivanov-Rier, whose family operates the Russian Kitchen, said the shootings had nothing to do with the restaurant, which closed at 5 p.m. Sunday. She said the shootings occurred closer to a dentist's office in the strip mall. She said she did not recognize the names of the men who were slain.

"Only because it was Russian, people make the connection," she said.

Family and friends mourned Stepankovskiy as an excellent teacher. Since June 2003, Stepankovskiy had operated a pair of Russian martial arts schools, the SystemaAcademy of Self Protection. One school is in Chicago; the other is near his home in Des Plaines.

"All I know is he got shot," Ekaterina Stepankovskiy said. "It's hard to talk about him."

She said his martial arts business had been successful and Stepankovskiy enjoyed teaching.

According to his Web site, Stepankovskiy was born in Uzbekistan and practiced martial arts for more than 16 years. He said he was trained in karate, jujitsu and boxing.

On his school's calendar, Stepankovskiy had been scheduled to teach a gun defense seminar March 19.

Stepankovskiy was trained by Vladimir Vasiliev, who operates a Toronto school of Russian martial arts based on Soviet special-forces training.

Sabrina Williams, a receptionist at Vasiliev's school, said the news of Stepankovskiy's death came as a shock.

"He was a very nice guy," she said. "I can't believe it. I thought it must be some kind of mistake."

She said Stepankovskiy was "very serious, straightforward and kind of friendly. He was an excellent teacher."

Neighbors of Drobetskiy in Wheeling said Drobetskiy and his wife kept to themselves.

Оказывается их не застрелили а зарезали.

Chicago Tribune: March 9, 2005

Autopsies performed Tuesday determined that the two men found behind a Wheeling shopping center had been beaten and stabbed to death, officials said.

Roman A. Drobetskiy, 34, of the 400 block of Marvin Place in Wheeling, died of multiple stab wounds in a homicide, said a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner.

Arkadiy Stepankovskiy, 29, of the 9200 block of West Emerson Street, Des Plaines, died of multiple injuries from an assault, also a homicide, the spokeswoman said.

Wheeling police said officers responding to a disturbance call found Stepankovskiy and Drobetskiy shortly after midnight Monday in the 700 block of Widgeon Drive. A third man was wounded and taken to a hospital for treatment.

Wheeling police originally reported that the men had been shot to death.

Police continued to question two men Tuesday but had no suspects, and no one had been charged, Deputy Chief John Stone said.
