Illinois Board of Cosmetology License Requirements
Illinois Board of Cosmetology License Information

Last Updated: November 8, 2013

In order to obtain a license in cosmetology, esthetics or nail technology in the state of Illinois, students must complete the requirements listed below from the Illinois State Board of Cosmetology. When getting an Illinois cosmetology license or other beauty practitioner certification, you must attend a licensed school and complete the state of Illinois's minimum required training hours and then take the state's cosmetology board exams. After finishing your training, you are required to pass a licensing exam issued by the Illinois State Board of Cosmetology. Once you pass this exam, you will receive your Illinois cosmetology license shortly thereafter. You're now able to work in the state of Illinois. Keep in mind, even though Illinois may not require continuing education to renew some licenses, you may wish to consider taking cosmetology continuing education hours in Illinois annually to stay current on the latest trends. For specific questions, please contact the IL Board of Cosmetology directly for more information. IL uses PSI for its cosmetology board exams, and you may take the exam in English, Spanish or Vietnamese.

The state of IL does not allow apprenticeship to get your training hours. However, an internship may be substituted for 150 hours of the 1500 hours of organized, pre-planned training from a full cosmetology program under the direct supervision of a licensed cosmetologist in a registered salon. You may participate in this internship program only after completing 750 hours of school training with a minimum average grade of 80.

Find Illinois beauty schools that can help you obtain a license in cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology and other beauty professions in the State of Illinois.

Illinois requires cosmetologists to certify on their renewal applications that they have successfully completed 14 hours of cosmetology continuing education within the 2-year licensure period. Cosmetology instructors and cosmetology clinic teachers must show a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education from a sponsor registered with the division within the 2-year licensure period.
Cosmetology License Reciprocity (Transfer) to Illinois

To transfer your license to Illinois, you'll need to show an official certification of licensure from the board of your home state where you're currently licensed and practicing. If it's not the original copy of your license it must include: legal name, cosmetologist license number, original issuance date, expiration date, brief description of any licensing exams taken and the grades received, and whether you have any disciplinary actions taken or pending against your license.

Illinois has an extensive statewide licensing system for cosmetologists. Applicants should first choose and attend a cosmetology course. After completing that course, an applicant then takes an exam to prove sufficient book knowledge and hands-on skills to perform cosmetology work. Those who pass the exam can get an Illinois cosmetology license from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

Step 1:

Complete the educational requirements to become an Illinois cosmetologist. This requires completion of a 1500-hour program that is at least 8 months but not longer than 7 straight years. If you have barber training, your school can accept a maximum of 500 hours as part of your 1500-hour cosmetology training requirement. Alternatively, you can have a combination of 1500 hours of barbering and 1000 hours in a cosmetology school, but in this case, the cosmetologist training must be at least 6 months and not more than 2 years.

Download the Illinois cosmetology license and examination fee (see Sources). In this application, you will see the names of dozens of approved Illinois cosmetology schools. Contact those schools individually to find out more about their cosmetologist training programs.

Note that you may also get a cosmetologist license by endorsement. To qualify under this method, you need to
have an existing license and have qualified with similar requirements as Illinois. This generally means completion of a cosmetology course of 1500 hours and passing an exam with a score of at least 75 percent. Finally, you will need to show proof of experience of at least three years.
